DIY Bathroom Remodeling or Hiring a Contractor
Whether to do your bathroom remodeling as a DIY project or whether you decide
on hiring a contractor is a decision only you can make. Assess your skills honestly if you planning this
as a diy bathroom remodeling project.
If indeed, you are very handy, you may be able to do
much of the remodel on a do-it-yourself basis, and just hire professionals to do some of the wiring or
plumbing. This will partially depend on how extensive a bathroom remodel you are planning.
If your new bathroom fixtures will be in the same place as the old ones, the
plumbing should be fairly manageable. Bathroom electrical
wiring is a serious matter from a safety standpoint. Consider what
needs to be done, and if you have the needed skill to complete the job.
Hiring a contractor for bathroom remodeling
If you hire a contractor to do the bathroom remodeling, get several estimates,
and get referrals from previous clients. If you are fortunate enough to have a friend who has used a contractor and
been pleased by the experience this may shorten the process.
Permits are another matter to consider. If you are undertaking remodeling
your bathroom on a do it yourself basis you will need to check into what permits are needed in your
area before you get started. If you hire a contractor, find out if the contractor will be responsible for the
permits, and if so make sure he gets them. And above all, get it in black and white. You should get written
itemized estimates of cost for the bathroom remodel from your contractor and specifically what the cost
covers, and also a start and finish date.
You'll also have to decide how you will manage the purchase of fixtures. Will you
buy them yourself, or will the contractor buy them? Certainly some shopping is called for, in any case. You will
want to do some comparison shopping yourself, so you know the value of what you are getting, and also so you can
see what is available. Showers and bathtubs offer many features these days such as water jets, massage, steam and
more. Shower heads are also very diverse in what features they offer.
You should comparison shop for fixtures, bathroom flooring, surface materials,
faucets and bathroom vanity
furniture and have a bathroom remodeling plan before you consider hiring a contractor.
There are many wonderful items these days that can add to the pleasure your new
bathroom will give. If you haven't looked at bathroom fixtures, cabinetry and accessories for a while it will be
well worth your time.
Shopping around will help you firm up your ideas so that whether you embark on
a do it yourself bath remodel or contract it out, you have your ideas in place and can work up a firm
bathroom remodeling plan for either you or the contractor you hire. You may find some additional help in forming
